The New York Times has called for the United States, Europe, Japan to “make sure they are not merely enabling a transition from a military dictatorship to military-run crony capitalism” in Burma. In an editorial in the International New York Times on Wednesday, the newspaper noted that the country had become “more open” to investment. But it pointed out that Burma’s military gets quarter of government expenditure, appoints 25 percent of parliamentary seats and runs companies. “At issue now is whether Myanmar’s transition will be more than a ploy to draw in foreign money to fatten the military,” the editorial said.
