Lawyers of a Rohingya baby in Australia have applied for the child to be granted a protection visa, after the family was transferred from a Nauru detention center to Brisbane, where the baby was born last month, the AAP reports. Australia’s immigration policy rejects asylum seekers who arrive by boat every year in the thousands, sending the so-called “boat people” to detention centers in Nauru or Papua New Guinea. “Ferouz’s family come from a persecuted minority group in Myanmar [Burma] that is not recognized as citizens by the government there,” the child’s lawyer said. “For that reason, baby Ferouz is considered stateless and, having been born in Australia, he is entitled to apply for a protection visa.”
