Position Title: Reporter (English Section) – The Irrawaddy

Applicants should have at least three years of proven experience in reporting and writing feature stories in English.

Successful candidates will be able to express ideas and shape stories concisely for an online readership; be familiar with working to same-day deadlines; know how to leverage social media to enhance their reporting; and possess a high level of awareness of Myanmar’s politics, economy and culture.

Candidates should also be well versed in using infographic tools to present their stories in the form of interactive maps and charts, as well as the use of smartphone cameras for work purposes.

Applicants should clearly specify the platforms in which they have experience, and provide social media links and/or other work samples reflecting that experience.

Job Overview

The Irrawaddy is seeking a Senior Finance Officer to support the financial management of our organization who is determined, highly motivated, and capable of working in Financial Management, Financial Operations, Administration, and especially can liaise with related stakeholders of the organization.

Main Responsibilities

  • Implement financial policies and procedures to ensure financial operational efficiency.
  • Conduct monthly financial analysis to identify and resolve internal financial management issues, gaps, and variances, and provide the necessary report and updates.
  • Provide inputs, clarifications, and support to the Executive Director, and Director as and when requested and required.
  • Conduct training for relevant finance team members on the accounting system and donors’ reporting.
  • Manage the annual budget and business plan with the guidance of the Executive Director, and Directors
  • Provide documents and information on financial matters to the Operations – Director during weekly/monthly management meetings.
  • Ensure the team follows internal control rules and regulations for financial management and all purchases.
  • Ensure all purchases and logistical contracts in The Irrawaddy follow its Code of Ethics
  • Work closely with internal and external auditors to conduct project-based audits and annual financial audits, including fixed asset control and internal auditing for all necessities.

Financial Administration

Supervise and ensure that all financial activities are up-to-date and accurately entered by the accountant.

Develop, update, and reinforce financial internal controls, policies, and procedures

Establish, maintain, and reconcile the General Ledger on a Weekly/Monthly basis, monitor cash balances and cash forecasts providing the supervisor with weekly updates.

Prepare monthly statements and balance sheets, reconcile bank statements and bank passbooks.

Manage cash controls, and ensure Accounts are maintained up-to-date bookkeeping.

Ensure all obligations for purchases and logistical management are upheld and enforced when The Irrawaddy enters into any project contracts with donors.

Ensure all senior management and editorial teams are properly informed and updated about such obligations.

Ensure all staff identified with any particular projects and donor’s contractual obligations are also aware of the do’s and don’ts associated with the project’s financial implementation.

Responsible for the annual closing of accounts.

Responsible for producing the quarterly report, mid-year reports, and annual reports for various donors, and preparing Annual P & L Statements.

Responsible for supervision, submission, and filing of annual taxes for the organization and employees.

Keep the CEO, and Director informed and updated on any changes in rules, regulations, or procedures pertaining to financial issues, and procedures required to be complied with having financial implications to the monthly and annual spending of the company.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Good command of written and spoken English, Burmese, and/or Thai
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a management position in financial management and reporting.
  • Bachelor/MA degree in Finance, Accounting, or related fields
  • Professional qualifications such as CFA/CPA/ACCA or similar will be considered as plus
  • Good financial analytical skills, along with being proactive and initiative in trouble-shooting financial-related issues and challenges.
  • Ability to build a good working relationship with all stakeholders
  • Computer skills in the use of financial management software

Qualifications Desired

  • Prior working experience with international donor-funded organizations will be considered an asset.

Roles and Responsibilities

Responsibilities:

WEBSITE DEVELOPMENT

  • Coordinate and consult with the Editorial Team in taking a leading role to establish priorities for web-site development, and to plan, review, and evaluate the websites.
  • Develop web page infrastructure, utilise applications to ensure effective and efficient technical performance, and assess the applicability of new technologies for organisational needs.
  • Design and upload daily news, articles, and commentaries in appropriate formats for the English online version.
  • Maintain and monitor the websites systematically and appropriately (e.g., hosting, minoring, archiving, updating, etc.).
  • Identify and promote the websites to others on the Web (search engine optimisation strategies).
