BBC to Open Burma Bureau

4 December 2013

The BBC, formerly banned from Burma, will open up a bureau in the country next year, according to a blog post from the broadcaster’s director of global news, Peter Horrocks. “The Myanmar Ministry of Information announced that the BBC, along with three other international news agencies, had been given official permission to open a news bureau in Burma,” Horrocks wrote. The BBC has long provided a Burmese-language news service produced outside the country, and Horrocks said that audience numbered some 8.4 million people. “There are many BBC bureaux across the world. But few as hard fought-for as this one,” wrote Horrocks, referring to the previous heavy censorship of media in Burma.
