The Building and Wood Worker’s International (BWI), a Geneva-based trade union federation, released a statement this week in support of workers at a furniture factory in Rangoon’s Myaungdagar Industrial Zone who are facing charges for holding a rally on Oct. 8 to call for improved working conditions. Noting that strikes and labor stoppages have been occurring in a number of industries in the country, the statement said that BWI would continue to work with trade unions to promote the growth of union membership in the Burmese wood, forestry, building and construction sectors.
