The citizenship of Shwe Maung, an elected MP from the ruling Union Solidarity and Development Party for Buthidaung Township in Arakan State, is under investigation following a complaint that he is not a Burmese national. According to a report by Eleven Media, Immigration and Population Minister Khin Yi confirmed last week during a trip to the United States that the Rohingya MP’s citizenship status is being investigated. Under Burma’s 1982 Immigration Law, the Rohingya are not regarded as Burmese citizens, although many were issued with ID cards in 2010 to enable them to vote in that year’s election.
