Representatives of Burma’s main opposition National League for Democracy (NLD) party have been formally invited to this year’s Martyrs’ Day celebration on July 19 by the government. The event commemorates when Gen Aung San, Burma’s independence hero and NLD Chairwoman Aung San Suu Kyi’s father, was assassinated along with eight comrades in 1947. Five representatives from the NLD will attend the ceremony on Thursday, party patron Tin Oo told Radio Free Asia on Sunday. This is the first time that the NLD has been formally invited since the November 2010 general election.
