A National League for Democracy (NLD) spokesperson released a statement on Sunday defending a member accused of raping a 15-year-old girl, according to a report by the Democratic Voice of Burma. The girl was allegedly drugged and sexually assaulted by the 22-year-old NLD member while visiting a party-run learning center in Rangoon’s Pandeban Township last Thursday. According to the statement issued by NLD Information Committee member Kyi Toe, the girl and the man were a couple, and there were no witnesses to the alleged incident. The NLD has declined to comment further on the case.
