In a first for Burma, a gay couple has married in a lavish public ceremony at an upscale hotel in Rangoon, reports AFP. Tin Ko Ko, 38, and Myo Min Htet, 28, who had been living together without publicly declaring their relationship, held the ceremony on their 10th anniversary. Both men work for human rights groups. “This is like a challenge to our neighbors, who do not understand us and see us as very strange people,” said Aung Myo Min, from the rights group Equality Myanmar. The marriage won’t be legally recognized, but the event was photographed and splashed across the front pages of several local newspapers. Same sex relations are criminalized in Burma, although the law is not strictly enforced.
