Burma is expected to attract 1,000 runners from 20 countries when its holds its first international marathon since 1996 on Sunday, according to a report by Radio Australia. The YOMA Yangon International Marathon, which will start and finish at the People’s Square near Shwedagon Pagoda, will include a full marathon, a 10 km run and a 3 km event. A spokesperson for the event said that it would show that Burma is “capable of hosting an international level sporting event and accommodate foreigners coming into our country.” Burma will also host the SEA Games later this year.
