The US Congress has attached conditions to a recently passed spending bill, calling on Burma to improve its human rights record and amend the country’s Constitution in order to receive certain aid funding, DVB reports. The appropriations bill, signed by US President Barack Obama on Friday, puts the conditions primarily on the US Economic Support Fund, which includes programs on military assistance, diplomatic expenditures and projects of the US Agency for International Development (USAID). DVB quoted a member of the US Congressional Research Service as saying the conditions were “partially based on a perception that the Thein Sein government has not adequately addressed the political prisoner issue.”
