The United Nations on Monday called for an immediate end to clashes between the Burma Army and rebels in Kachin state, Agence France Presse (AFP) reports. Despite ongoing ceasefire talks, fighting between government troops and the Kachin independence Army (KIA) over the weekend affected about 2,000 civilians in Mansi Township. AFP said the UN raised concerns about displaced people and some 700 pupils at a school that was at one point surrounded by the Burma Army. “The latest battle has also affected internally displaced persons located around the area…these IDPs have been displaced by earlier skirmishes,” the UN said, according to AFP.
