Switzerland Lifts Burmese Sanctions
11 May 2012
On Wednesday Switzerland lifted most sanctions on Burma, according to AFP; the decision came into force on Thursday. Embargoes on arms and other goods liable to be used in repression remained. The State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) said: “The Federal Council welcomes the positive developments witnessed in recent months in Myanmar and intends to support the reform efforts with the partial lifting of sanctions.” The SECO reserved the right to reverse the decision if the political situation in Burma deteriorates badly.
