Lower House Speaker Shwe Mann led the first ever delegation of Burmese parliamentarians and officials to the European Parliament on Thursday, according to AFP. The delegation met EU President Herman Van Rompuy and the EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton. Martin Schulz, the president of the European Parliament, said: “The recent impressive democratic opening of [Burma] gives us much hope and optimism.” The EU will suspend most sanctions on Burma on Friday and previously sent Ashton to Rangoon to open to an EU office, the first step to establishing a full diplomatic mission.
