Suspected Muslim separatists have killed three soldiers and wounded six others in an attack in southern Thailand. Police Col Samneang Luejeangkam says the attackers hurled a grenade into a school in Yala Province’s Krongpinang District on Saturday while soldiers were taking part in a daily briefing in the schoolyard. Soldiers guard state schools in the area because teachers are often targets of the separatists, who regard them as representatives of the government. More than 5,000 people have been killed in Thailand’s three southernmost provinces since an Islamist insurgency flared in 2004.—AP
