Thailand’s ousted former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra said that Thailand and Japan need to team up to develop the Dawei deep-sea port project in southern Burma. Calling the project “an important strategy for both Japan and Thailand,” Thaksin said it would drastically reduce the cost of transporting natural gas and Middle East crude oil to Thailand, where Japan has invested heavily in a number of sectors. He made the remarks in an interview with the Yomiuri Shimbun on Friday during a visit to Tokyo to attend the opening of the Japan-Thailand Economic Partnership Promotion Organization.
