Police to Arrest Anyone Violating Sittwe Curfew
16 May 2014
Next month, Arakan State police will start arresting anyone found on the street in Sittwe during the 9 pm-5 am curfew, Mizzima reports. The outlet cites a “security message” for American citizens issued on May 14 by the US Embassy in Rangoon. “State Police have announced that beginning May 31, they will arrest persons who do not abide by the curfew,” the message said. The Arakan State capital was the scene of attacks on UN and aid group offices in March by Arakanese Buddhist mobs, who opposed humanitarian aid for tens of thousands of Rohingya Muslims. The city has since been under a curfew that was recently relaxed.
