The National League for Democracy (NLD) plans to hold a special assembly later this year for youth members, according to a report by The Myanmar Times. The gathering will take place after the party holds its first general assembly since its 1988 founding, the report said. The decision to hold a separate assembly for youth members, who comprise roughly half of the NLD’s nearly 400,000 members, was first suggested by party leader Aung San Suu Kyi in 2003, said NLD spokesperson Nyan Win. He added that the move is part of an effort to boost the role of younger members in the party.
