NLD Delegation Makes First Visit to China
By The Irrawaddy 9 December 2013
A 10-member delegation of Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy departed for Beijing on Sunday at the invitation of China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Democratic Voice of Burma reports. NLD delegation includes spokesman Nyan Win, economist Myo Myint, Kyi Kyi Win and NLD youth members. It is the first time that a NLD delegation visits China. For more than 20 years, China was the main economic backer of Burma’s former military regime, which suppressed any opposition activities. China has stepped up its engagement with the Burmese opposition and public in the past year after its megaprojects in Burma sparked a popular backlash.
