Since President Thein Sein’s quasi-civilian government took charge in 2011, recent violence against Muslims and claims the violence was instigated by a hardline faction in the government has raised questions over whether reforms will be sidetracked by hardliners. In an editorial, the state-run New Light of Myanmar on Wednesday wrote a less than masked warning against “narcissistic leaders,” in characteristically bizarre prose. Leadership “is a series of arbitrary choices and decisions,” the paper said. “Narcissistic leaders…will continue to serve in government… all are to say no to narcissistic leaders who pose a grave threat to democratization.”
