Ital-Thai to Pull Out of Dawei SEZ
18 November 2013
The Thai firm Italian-Thai Development will this week cease to play a role in development of the Dawei Special Economic Zone, The Nation newspaper reports. “We’re now closing our camp at the Dawei site and have been asked to stop operations and leave there before November 21,” a source close to the project was quoted as saying. Ital-Thai was working with Burma’s government on long-stalled megaproject, but the framework agreement defining the partnership had lapsed, the source explained. Plans for development of a deep-sea port, industrial estate, and road and rail link to Thailand were to be carried out by Ital-Thai, but the project has struggled to attract additional investors.
