India’s government has asked Burma to form a Joint Border Working Group to address issues related to the demarcation of their shared border, The Indian Express newspaper reports. The move comes after Burmese troops attempted to set up a military outpost within disputed territory. Although India’s Home Ministry denied that the troops had violated Indian territory, the Burmese action provoked protests by local people in Moreh, in the India state of Manipur. The Burmese stopped construction of the outpost near border pillar number 76 after the two sides agreed to build a fence to ward off Indian farmers who were allegedly trying to harvest land claimed by Burma.
