The European Union is poised to substantially lift economic sanctions against Burma this month following Sunday’s landmark by-elections, reveals a senior EU diplomat. EU ambassadors debated on Wednesday whether the punitive restrictive measures should be removed as a reward for the weekend poll and recent reforms. “Everybody is on the same page for a substantial lifting of sanctions, with some red lines,” the anonymous diplomat was quoted by AFP. “While political reconciliation appears on the way, we continue to demand the release of prisoners and the end of ethnic minority conflicts.”
