Engaging Burma Correct Call: Singapore PM
5 April 2012
Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong believes that the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) was correct to engage rather than isolate Burma. Lee told reporters on Wednesday that the military-dominated nation needed help to change. “I would say it is not because of Asean’s approach that Myanmar has done these [reforms]. But we took the right approach in keeping Myanmar in the family and working with Myanmar rather than try to ostracize and penalize it the way some of the Western countries have tried to do with sanctions,” Lee was quoted by the Straits Times.
