The European Union said on Saturday that it would provide an additional US $4 million in mostly food aid to Burma as fighting in Kachin State continues to force civilians there and in northern Shan State to flee, and tens of thousands remain displaced by last year’s communal clashes in Arakan State. The increased aid comes on top of 45 million euros ($61 million) in humanitarian aid the EU has awarded to Burma over the past two years, reports EUbusiness.com. Meanwhile, the head of the EU’s humanitarian aid department, Claus Sorensen, on Saturday voiced concern at the “dramatic deprivation” in camps in Arakan State.
