Chinese health authorities say a 73-year-old woman died after being infected with a bird flu strain that had not previously spread to humans. The Jiangxi province’s health department said on Wednesday that China’s national disease center confirmed the woman had been infected by the H10N8 bird flu strain. The department says the woman had severe pneumonia before dying Dec. 6 in an eastern city. It says she suffered high blood pressure, heart disease and other underlying health problems that lowered her immunity. Her medical history showed she had had exposure to live poultry. The department says experts believe this is an isolated case and there’s low risk of this strain infecting more people or spreading.—AP
