US hotel chain Best Western International has taken over management of the Green Hill Hotel in central Rangoon, making it the first US company to enter Burma’s fast-growing hotel market. In a press release, the company said its partnership with the six-month-old, 189-room Green Hill Hotel was just the first step in a long-term commitment to building Best Western’s presence in Burma. Growth in Burma’s tourism sector has been dramatic since the country opened up two years ago, but a lack of hotels, particularly in Rangoon, has hampered further expansion.
