National League for Democracy (NLD) members in Shan State’s Taunggyi District were forced to resign from the party at gunpoint on Sunday over a dispute about land allegedly confiscated from local farmers by an ethnic militia group, DVB reports. The militia—formerly the Pa-O National Army—was angry with the NLD members’ support for the farmers, who claim their land was taken from them by the armed group. Tin Maung Toe, the NLD chairperson in Taunggyi, said 57 party members in Satthay, a village in Lawksawk Township, resigned after they were threatened by the militia’s commander.
