Two ethnic Arakanese political parties reaffirmed at a meeting held in Arakan State on Aug. 17-19 that they would join forces, according to a report by Mizzima. The Arakan League for Democracy (ALD) and the Rakhine Nationalities Development Party (RNDP) first announced in June that they planned to merge into a single party. ALD Secretary Myo Kyaw said they originally planned to register as a new party by the end of August, but that the date had been postponed until early September so that preparatory work could be completed. The ALD secured the third highest number of seats in the 1990 general election, while the RNDP won 12 seats in 2010.
