The activist who was at the center of a diplomatic tussle between Beijing and Washington says Chinese officials have told him the passports that he and his family just applied for should be ready within two weeks. Chen Guangcheng said in a phone interview Thursday he’s not sure whether he’ll be able to leave China quickly after that. The blind activist has been under virtual house arrest for two weeks in a Beijing hospital following his dramatic escape from abusive officials in his home village. The US embassy sheltered him for six days, and he wants to travel to the US to study.—AP
