Thirty-two people were killed and 190 others injured during the water festival that marks the Buddhist New Year in Burma, state media reported over the weekend. The New Light of Myanmar said on Saturday that the 177 criminal cases, which included murders, assaults, theft and arson, were fewer than in previous years. The paper attributed the decrease to “precautions from TV and newspapers and close supervision of officials concerned. The water festival, also known as Thingyan, was celebrated from April 13 to 16.
