Video obtained by the BBC shows police officers standing idly by as rioters attacked minority Muslims in Meiktila Township last month. Muslim-owned homes and businesses are seen being looted and destroyed, and in one clip police look on as a man is left to burn in the street. The violence killed at least 43 people – most of them Muslims – and was set off by a dispute on March 20 that took place between Buddhists and the Muslim owners of a gold shop. Authorities finally managed to bring the situation under control after three days of rioting in the region.
