The Myanmar Times on Tuesday wrote it was due to begin daily publication on May 3, coinciding with World Press Freedom day, but majority shareholder Dr Tin Tun Oo’s company, Swesone, refused to sign off on the license. Managing director Ross Dunkley said the paper was faced with “the somewhat absurd situation of [The Myanmar Times] launching its new-look daily as a weekly”. Ownership of the Times was recently back under the spotlight as co-founder Sonny Swe when he was released from prison in an amnesty on April 23 after serving 8 years for breaching censorship laws.
