Myanmar’s young military cadets at the Defense Services Academy in Pyin Oo Lwin in Mandalay partied outdoors at the academy to celebrate the Thingyan water festival on Wednesday. In other parts of the country, people declined to join the usually joyous, days-long event, believing their participation would dishonor those killed by the junta’s forces during their crackdowns on anti-regime protesters. The Myanmar military has killed more than 700 people amid crackdowns since February.
