LETPADAN, Pegu Division — Under the gaze of nearby security forces, members of Burmese punk rock band Rebel Riot performed for protesters in Letpadan, Pegu Division on Monday afternoon, alongside reggae singer Saw Pho Khwa and musicians from the Myanmar Christian Fellowship of the Blind.
Students have been staging a sit-in since Mar. 3, after authorities blocked them from marching to Rangoon in order to demonstrate their support for reform of the National Education Law.
“They seem tired,” Rebel Riot singer Ko Htet said. “We are here to show our support for the students and our objection to the government’s decision to block a peaceful rally.”
In a stripped back set, relying on portable amplifiers and a snare drum tethered to a plastic chair in lieu of a full drum kit, Rebel Riot played songs on the subject of dictatorship and Burma’s education system.
