On Wednesday, U Htin Kyaw, the president of Myanmar’s first democratically elected government since 1962, resigned from his post. The reason for his sudden departure, according to an announcement from the President’s Office, was that the 71-year-old needs rest—probably due to a long-suspected illness. A confidant of National League for Democracy leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, he assumed the country’s top job after the party won the general election in 2015, as Suu Kyi is constitutionally barred from holding the presidency.
