On Wednesday, U Htin Kyaw, the president of Myanmar’s first democratically elected government since 1962, resigned from his post. The reason for his sudden departure, according to an announcement from the President’s Office, was that the 71-year-old needs rest—probably due to a long-suspected illness. U Htin Kyaw was in office from March 30, 2016 to March 20 of this year. To bid farewell to the outgoing president, The Irrawaddy presents a photographic look back at his two-year tenure.
