Police in riot gear have been a common sight in Yangon for the past two days, as tens of thousands of people have taken to the streets to protest against the military coup. With columns of peaceful protesters flooding the downtown streets, the heavy deployments of troops—accompanied by police vans and water canon trucks—near the protest venues in downtown Yangon and Hledan near Yangon University are a grim reminder that a crackdown against the demonstrators could happen any time. So far, the authorities have refrained from reacting. But their batons could be wielded at once, with a phone call from the generals giving the go-ahead.
