Burmese Vice President Nyan Tun has spoken out in defense of large-scale land seizures under the previous military regime, Mizzima reports. During a ceremony in Irrawaddy Division’s Kyaunggone Township marking the return about 35,000 acres of confiscated land to farmers on Sunday, he said, “We confiscated land to increase the presence of our military… a strong military is key to safeguarding our national sovereignty.” Nyan Tun continued, “We confiscated land to build towns and villages because our population was growing. We needed to build industrial zones, railways and bridges to improve our productivity; we needed to give space to farming companies to increase agricultural yield.”
