Sri Lanka’s government has banned the latest issue of Time magazine because it features a photo of prominent Burmese monk Wirathu above the words “The Face of Buddhist Terror” on its cover. “We did not allow this issue to be distributed in Sri Lanka because we felt it could hurt the religious sentiments of the people,” said customs department spokesman Leslie Gamini, according to a report by AFP. Sri Lanka, which like Burma is a Buddhist-majority country, has also experienced outbreaks of violence between Buddhists and minority Muslims. The country’s president, Mahinda Rajapaksa, urged monks earlier this year not to incite religious hatred and violence.
