A Thai government committee has decided to extend a deadline for the registration of illegal migrant workers by six months, according to a report by the Bangkok-based newspaper The Nation. The proposed extension will be submitted to the Thai cabinet in two weeks, and the Interior Ministry will also be asked to allow migrants waiting to register to remain in the country. There are around two million workers from Burma in Thailand, 800,000 of whom have yet to verify their nationality at centers set up by the Burmese government. The new deadline will be Dec. 14.
