Aung San Suu Kyi met seven labor activists on Wednesday to discuss recent developments affecting Burmese workers ahead of her planned visit to Switzerland next week to address the International Labour Organization. According to activist lawyer U Htay, the one-hour meeting covered a number of topics, including a recent series of strikes and legal difficulties in forming labor unions. The activists said that two labor laws passed by Parliament last year need to be amended, as it is still too difficult for workers to form unions under these laws. Suu Kyi will deliver her speech to the ILO on June14.
