Participants at a pro-Constitution rally organized by the ruling Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) in Irrawaddy Division’s Zalun Township said they were tricked into joining the event, Mizzima reports. The event drew about 5,000 people, according to township USDP secretary Cho Myint Khaing, who said many held up placards stating they opposed constitutional reforms. Participants said, however, that most came because of the promise of free food and a raffle. “We attended because of the raffle for images of the Buddha, in our village we had understood that the purpose of the event was to show our commitment to race and religion,” Ko Naing Lin said.
