Burma has updated the death toll in recent communal clashes in Arakan State to 78. The Information Ministry’s website also said on Tuesday that 87 people were injured in 97 clashes between Arakanese Buddhists and Muslim Rohingyas from May 28 to June 24. It said 3,158 buildings were burned down during the violence. Tensions between the Arakanese and the Rohingyas are longstanding, in part because many Arakanese consider the Rohingyas to be illegal settlers from neighboring Bangladesh, while the Rohingya insist that they have lived in the region for centuries.—AP
