Nine political parties have agreed this week to form an alliance in a bid to shore up unity among democratic forces, reports the Democratic Voice of Burma. The parties, including the National League for Democracy (NLD) breakaway party the National Democratic Force (NDF), mostly belong to the loose grouping known as the “Third Force,” which positioned itself as an alternative to Burma’s main opposition party ahead of elections in 2010, which the NLD boycotted. NDF leader Khin Maung Swe said the parties had agreed to form a Federal Democratic Alliance to “promote ethnic nationalism and unite all political forces under the umbrella of nationalism when establishing a federal union.”
