Thousands of monks protested in Mandalay on Friday afternoon against the opening of an Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) office in Burma and the destruction of Buddhist monasteries in Cox’s Bazar in neighboring Bangladesh. Local residents told The Irrawaddy that monks from almost every monastery in the city took part in the protest. Demonstrations have been held throughout the week in various parts of Burma to oppose the opening of an OIC office in Sittwe, capital of Arakan State, where Muslims and Buddhists clashed earlier this year.
