The Kachin Independence Organization (KIO) has begun construction of a new refugee camp in its territory in response after local Chinese authorities urged the group to repatriate Kachin civilians displaced by more than a year of conflict in northern Burma. Officials in the Chinese border town of Ruili said that they wanted the Kachin refugees staying in the Nongdao district of Yunnan Province to go back to Burma as soon as possible, according to the Kachin News Group. There are an estimated 10,000 Kachin refugees living in temporary camps on the Chinese side of the Kachin border.
