Officials from the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) said Burmese government forces are massing in preparation for what appears to be an assault on the group’s headquarters, according to a report by the Thailand-based Kachin News Group. The officials said the Burmese army has focused its buildup efforts on Lajayang, located less than 8 km from the Sino-Burmese border town of Laiza, where the KIA’s political wing, the Kachin Independence Organization, is based. Fighting between the KIA and Burmese army has continued since the breakdown of a ceasefire agreement last June.
