Karen insurgent groups have again voiced their concern over the resumption of the Hatgyi hydropower project on the Salween River in Karen State, Eleven Media reports. The huge dam is reportedly being planned by China’s Sinohydro Corporation, the Thai government body EGAT and Burmese firm IGE Company. Karen National Union joint secretary Thaw Thi Bwe said, “Our stand is not to allow such kind of big project until we have a guarantee to discuss politics.” Democratic Karen Benevolent Army commander Colonel Maung Kyar said, “We cannot allow it at the moment. If they try to build the dam by force, war will surely break out.”
