Kachin groups in Australia plan to boycott opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi’s visit to the country later this month, in protest of her “silence” over ongoing fighting in Burma’s north between ethnic rebels and the Burma Army. Suu Kyi “has not only remained silent but [is] actively whitewashing the immensity of the issues by openly admitting her fondness for the military and campaigning for increased military training and assistance from the international community,” a coalition of four ethnic Kachin groups in Australia said this week. Suu Kyi, who chairs the National League for Democracy (NLD) party, is scheduled to visit Australia from Nov. 27 to Dec. 2.
