The Tenasserim Division government met with representatives of the Karen National Union (KNU) on Nov. 8 and both sides agreed to work together on resolving land disputes in the region, Karen News reports. Parts of Tenasserim have seen a rapid increase in land disputes in the past year due to an influx of Thai investors. According to KNU Mergui-Dawei District chairman Beeler, the state government agreed to let the KNU carry out land measurements and designate forest areas and wildlife sanctuaries, while Karen villages’ customary land rights would be recognized.
